Welcome to the 8th Day Community

discovering life in communities of compassion within the city

Welcome to the 8th Day Community. “8th Day,” refers to the early Christian description of Jesus’ resurrection, meaning a “new day of creation,” a “new genesis”; the “eighth day” of a renewed humanity - the fullness of time. The 8th Day Community is a community of resurrection, transformation and hope. We invite you to look over our web-site and discover what this growing community is being called into. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

The 8th Day Community is dedicated to living compassion in the city; this description has two meanings. The first is that we look at a life of compassion as central to our calling and vocation, so we “live” this out in the present as people of faith with active concern for the poor, the marginalized, and the brokenness of humankind. The second meaning is that “living compassion” means we are part of the grand story of redemption and renewal as Jesus creates a new humanity in us as we incarnate, or flesh-out His love. In short, this compassion is a personal journey of faith and self-awareness into God’s compassionate heart, while at the same time our personal journey becomes a community adventure in giving ourselves away to the “least, the lost, and the lonely.”

We also believe that God has a unique calling for 8th Day and the Church in general primarily in the cities of this world. The majority of the world’s population will soon be living within the city landscape and this vast people movement into the urban world is a big part of 8th Day’s calling and passion. The opportunities for service and acts of compassion are endless of course, but we believe by being prayerful and strategic our prophetic voice of love will be heard by many. Jesus is calling us into a life of risk and of adventure in a community that blesses the local church and strives to strengthen the unity of all believers.

The 8th Day Community is defined not only by compassion demonstrated primarily within the city, but also by the growing calling to reflect the image of God (the Imago Dei). We are a learning community growing in the rich and extraordinary history and traditions of the Church – both ancient and contemporary, focusing our attention mainly in the Celtic Church tradition of wisdom and spirituality. In sum, we are a community of contemplation and prayer in the truest sense of the word – finding Christ in the depths of His word and the depths of our hearts, and then compelled by His love to serve one another in the world we all share, shaping the stories that we steward and invite others into.

The Church has many rich and deeply spiritual traditions, concerning herself with creation and care for the poor, as well as a vibrant creative and artistic expression in an evangelistic fervor that has and is risking much to proclaim the risen Savior! That is the aim of the 8th Day Community, to be a purposeful community defined by prophetic acts of compassion and expressing the love of Jesus to a desperate and often dangerous world; a world full of wonder and mystery filled with the life, love, and freedom of our Triune God of Grace.

"(349) The eighth day. But for us a new day has dawned: the day of Christ's Resurrection. The seventh day completes the first creation. The eighth day begins the new creation. Thus, the work of creation culminates in the greater work of redemption. The first creation finds its meaning and its summit in the new creation in Christ, the splendor of which surpasses that of the first creation." from the Catholic Catechism

Peace to you as you enter into God’s extravagant love and adventurous grace!
